Really well put together course that gives an overview and kindles a deeper understanding of using Python to manipulate data stuctures in ways that make it easier to extrapolate information out of raw data.

This review is after my completion of the 2nd course of 'Programming for everybody: Python Data Structures'. Normally, I find that when a review is written as a continuous narrative, it is usually difficult to comprehend the issues raised, hence I'm numbering the points in this review: 1. For a novice (like me), if the objective is to know what programming is about, and the language of choice is Python, then this is a good course to take with an excellent instructor, Dr. Charles 'Chuck' Severance, to render its basics that can help to build one's confidence in programming. 2. My concern however, is what I find lacking in this course, and that is the question: 'what can I do with this newly acquired programming skill in terms of applying same to solving real life problems or challenges'? 3. Asked more succinctly, the question would be: 'How do I use the Python language to write a program to develop an App that can be used to request a vendor to perform a certain service and also get paid'? In other words, how do I develop an App using Python? 4. Answering the questions above could be reflected more in the type of assignments and exercises given instead of simply parsing e-mail messages. I believe, for instance, that there are more challenges in life than knowing who has sent the most e-mails or counting number of e-mails sent and their respective senders. 5. It would be useful/helpful, for example, to give sample exercises/assignments that require writing a program to develop an App targeted at service delivery, payments, etc. This would help to convey the link between writing a program and developing a corresponding App. 6. If the above points (2, 3, 4 & 5) seem beyond the purview of this course, then it should be emphasized at the beginning of the course so that novices (like me) in the course can re-assess their expectations. 7. Maybe there are other courses that help to link these seemingly disconnected or disjointed topics (i.e., programming vs Web and/or App development). Such a course should be recommended to participants who may wish to register for it immediately after the programming course. After all that's been said and done, I can safely say that I'm now a budding programmer who has come a long way from being a complete novice just a bit over 4 weeks ago, and it's all thanks to Dr. Chuck!!!
