When you hear the phrase "climate innovation," do you immediately picture new, clean technologies? You are not alone; we are accustomed to associating innovation with technological innovation or shiny inventions. While these advancements are crucial, technologies alone are insufficient to tackle complex climate challenges. Social systems, policy, community impact, as well as local and Indigenous practices, are also important factors when assessing a potential solution to this global challenge.

In the “Innovative Climate Solutions” course—part of the “Climate Solutions” course series available on Michigan Online—you will look beyond technological solutions when evaluating the impact of climate action. By understanding how adaptation and mitigation intersect with innovation, practitioners can expand simple technical fixes to design holistic and lasting climate-change solutions.

Distinguish Climate Adaptation from Mitigation

Effective climate solutions begin with identifying whether a strategy addresses the causes or the consequences of climate change.

  • Climate adaptation focuses on adjusting to current or expected climate impacts to build climate resilience. Examples include building climate-resilient infrastructure, enhancing disaster management, and introducing drought-resistant crops.
  • Climate mitigation focuses on measures taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or expand carbon sinks. Examples include transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and reducing industrial emissions.

Some of the most effective innovative climate solutions deliver dual benefits, incorporating adaptive approaches along with emissions-reducing initiatives for a two-pronged front against climate change. Forest conservation, wetland restoration, and climate-smart agriculture reduce emissions while simultaneously protecting communities against environmental risks.

As you progress through this course, you’ll explore how climate innovation intersects with these adaptive and mitigative approaches, and its importance in identifying successful solutions.

What is Climate Innovation?

The Environmental Defense Fund defines climate innovation as the collaboration of technology, public policy, and investment to create new or enhanced solutions to the global climate crisis. The process of innovation involves research, development, demonstration, and deployment.

The search for solutions often inspires an idea for a new technological innovation. Yet the idea is only the starting point — not every innovation automatically creates meaningful change. For example, in 2022, Adidas built a tennis court out of recycled ocean plastics to raise awareness about marine pollution. Beyond the cognizance, are there lasting ecological benefits to be gained from a floating tennis court?

The course reinforces that innovation alone doesn’t lead to impactful climate solutions. Creating comprehensive change means moving from ideas into action that benefits communities. There are examples of successful climate innovation across a variety of sectors, including:

  • Technological: A Sierra Leone inventor created a device to capture kinetic energy from traffic to generate clean power, an example of innovation in mitigation.
  • Social: Artificial glaciers were built in Ladakh, India, providing water to a community battling shrinking glaciers, an example of innovation in adaptation.
  • Institutional: Climate advocates like Vanessa Nakate of Uganda and Greta Thunberg of Sweden drive policy and social innovation, combating climate change through public engagement.
